Beat Bizarre interview
Beat Bizarre is the Danish project formed by René Nielsen (33 years old, also Loopis) and Martin Spanner Zimmermann (32 years, also Martian, Audiopile and Decoy). After a huge success of their debut "Lewd", their second album is going to be released in March.
1) When did you start making psytrance music? How did it happen?
René: I started to listen to minimal teckno in early 90´s and then I bought my first sampler in 92 and from that till today it was up and down until I meet martin in 96 and we started the Beat Bizarre project
2) Do you have any musical education?
René: I have no musical education but I just started doing piano lessons ....you never get too old to learn new stuff.
Martin:
No, not really, but I have been playing music all my life in different bands and so on.
3) What can you tell us about your forthcoming album?
Beat Bizarre:
The album is called Pandoras Groove Box and it will be released on Iboga Records. We have been working on it a couple of years
on and off....but we decided to go for unrealesed stuff instead of reusing prior releases
exept one track..
4) How is the new album different from your debut?
Beat Bizarre:
The sound is a litlle more "full on" than the first album, but still groovy. I hope that we still have our own sound. It`s a wide range of different styles.
5) What gear do you use for music creation?
Beat Bizarre: We use mostly the computer..Cubase is sequence source ..and then we use a lot of softsynth/plug-ins.
René: I use also the akai s 5000..my favourite tule..Martin is more on the PC.
6) And what gear do you use live on stage?
Beat Bizarre: Live we have a custom build rack mount PC and we use some external synths and of course Ableton live. We are trying to develop the live..every time we play.
7) What are your favourite psytrance/progressive projects?
Beat Bizarre: Don´t really have any favourite artists as long as its groovy and good for dancing.
8) What about any other kind of music?
René: : I listen to practicly every style of music..but I’m having a trance period in my life listening to it at home every day.
Martin: I love almost all types of music there is, but at the moment I have a pop period...
9) Spice Girls and so on? :)
Martin: Sure, and Robbie Williams and so on
10) What was your most memorable gig so far? Where have you been playing recently?
Beat Bizarre: The most memorable gig was no doubt Voov Experince 10`th anniversary,,,, recently we played in Zurich NYE and we have a lot of bookings in the near future.
11) Are you planning any tour to present your new album?
Beat Bizarre: Hmm.. We are talking with our booker about it....we are going to Mexico for 2 weeks in the easter..but I think the plans will be more specific when the album is released.
12) How is the psychedelic scene in Denmark? I mean projects, parties, people
Beat Bizarre: There is a lot of music coming out of Copenhagen. There are bands still waiting to release on Iboga ..so it looks really good .. there´s not really that many parties that we go to in DK, but we hope that the summer will bring some good events.
13) What do you think about the evolution of psytrance music in last few years?
Martin: : I think that there have been too much "progressive" interest in the last couple of years, meaning that there was really no room for the sound inbetween "full on" and "pro"...
René: I really think that the music is getting closer to what I like...but i would like the "pro"..and the psy full on to melt into one organic jellyfish with a lot of funky elements . but there has been some really strong releases like Antix and Phony Orphants.
14) What is your opinion about the mp3 phenomenon?
Beat Bizarre:
We think it SUCKS that people don’t respect the labels and the artist work by stealing it instead of BUYING the music. This phenomenon is killing a lot of alternative record labels, and the music scene everywhere. Of course it can also help to promote the artist in order to get more gigs, but then again the labels have to come up with a solution!! Iboga is starting up a homepage where you will be able to download music..paying a small amount

15) What are you doing besides music making? Your job? Or are you able to survive just from the music creation?
Martin: I`m only doing music at the moment, but I`m trying to get in to a producer school, but it`s hard work and really tuff.
René: I’m studying full time...and I will go to business school next year..I want to have my own little business. And then I’m married..full time...with a mexican women...I met on a tour.
16) Do you have any special plans for the future?
René: I think that we will try to work a little on seperate projects....but you never know what will happen in the future..and I’m hoping to work more in the studio with other musicians..I’m working on a track with Jeppe from Phony Orphants..soon to be finished.
Martin: I`m trying to put a solo album together (Martian) and I`m also working with different people in the studio, a litlle hip hop and some pop and so on....

And of couse we are gonna travel the world.

1) Kdy jste začali věnovat této hudbě? Jak jste se k tomu vlastně dostali?
René:Na počátku devadesátých let jsem začal poslouchat minimal tekno a v roce 1992 jsem si koupil svůj první sampler v roce 1996 jsem potkal Martina a založili jsme projekt Beat Bizarre.
2) Máte nějaké hudební vzdělání?
René: Hudební vzdělání nemám, ale zrovna teď jsem začal brát hodiny piana podle mě nikdy nejsi dost starý na to, aby ses naučil něco nového
Martin:
Ne, ve skutečnosti ne, ale celý život jsem hrál v nejrůznějších kapelách atd.
3) Co nám můžete říct o Vašem novém albu?
Beat Bizarre:
Album se bude jmenovat Pandora´s Groovebox a vyjde na Iboga records. Pracovali jsme na něm několik let
s přestávkama
rozhodli jsme se vydat úplně nový, dosud nikde neuveřejněný materiál
teda až na jednu skladbu.
4) Jak se nové album liší od vašeho debutu?
Beat Bizarre:
Zvukově je to trochu víc "full-on" než první album, ale pořád groovy. Doufám, že to ještě pořád má náš typický zvuk. Každopádně se jedná o široký záběr nejrůznějších stylů.
5) Jakou výbavu používáte při hudební tvorbě?
Beat Bizarre: Především používáme počítač
Cubase jako sequencer
a hodně soft-synthů/plug-inů.
René: Já používám ještě AKAI 5000
moje oblíbená mašinka
Martin je spíš přes ten počítač.
6) A při hraní live?
Beat Bizarre: Při live setu používáme PC a pár externích synthů a samozřejmě Ableton live. Pokaždé se snažíme naše live vystoupení trochu vylepšit.
7) Jaké jsou Vaše oblíbené psytrance/progressive projekty?
Beat Bizarre:Nemáme žádné konkrétní oblíbené projekty, hlavní je, aby to bylo groovy a dobré na tancování.
8) Co takhle jiné hudební styly?
René: Poslouchám prakticky všechno teď mám momentálně trancové období, doma teď poslouchám tuhle hudbu denně.
Martin: Mám rád skoro všechny hudební styly, ale momentálně mám popové období
9) Spice Girls apod.? :)
Martin: Jistě, taky Robbieho Williamse atd.
10) Na jakou akci nejraději vzpomínáte? Kde jste hráli v poslední době?
Beat Bizarre: Rozhodně na desáté výročí Voov Experience festivalu jinak v poslední době jsme hráli v Zurichu NYE a v blízké budoucnosti nás čeká spousta dalších zajímavých akcí.
11) Plánujete nějaké turné na představení Vašeho nového alba?
Beat Bizarre: Hmm tohle teď řešíme s naším manažerem na Velikonoce pojedeme na dva týdny do Mexika myslím, že konkrétní plány budou až poté, co album vyjde.
12) Jaká je vlastně dánská scéna? Akce, lidi, projekty
Beat Bizarre: V Kodani se teď objevuje spousta nové hudby. Některé projekty už teď jen čekají na to, až jim Iboga vydá jejich muziku...takže v téhle oblasti je to fakt dobrý Není tady sice teď moc parties, kam by se dalo zajít, ale léto snad přinese nějaké zajímavé akce.
13) Co si myslíte o vývoji v psytrancu v posledních letech?
Martin: V poslední době to podle mě všechno šlo až příliš "progressive" směrem, čímž mám na mysli to, že nevznikalo moc věcí, které by kombinovaly "proggy" a "full-on" zvuk
René: Já si myslím, že psytrance teď stále více směřuje k tomu, co se mi líbí
nejlepší by bylo, kdyby se "proggy" a "psy full-on" smíchaly do "one organic jellyfish with a lot of funky elements" (tohle jsem prostě musel nechat v originále - Slater :)
vyšlo teď hodně dobrých věcí jako třeba Antix nebo Phony Orphants.
14) Jaký je Váš názor na fenomén mp3?
Beat Bizarre:
Fakt nás štve, že lidi nerespektují práci labelů a umělců tím, že kradou hudbu místo toho, aby jí kupovali
tenhle fenomén zabíjí spostu alternativních labelů a hudební scénu vůbec. Tohle samozřejmě taky může dělat autorům slušnou promotion, ale labely musí přijít s řešením
jako třeba Iboga
chystají se spustit stránku, kde by bylo možné si za malý poplatek stahovat hudbu v mp3 formátu
dáme vám vědět, až se to rozběhne.
15) Co děláte kromě hudební tvorby? Nebo se tím uživíte?
Martin: Já se momentálně věnuji pouze hudbě, ale snažím se dostat do producentské školy, což je bohužel dost těžký
René: Já studuji
příští rok nastupuji do obchodní školy
rád bych začal podnikat. A taky jsem ženatý
na plný úvazek
s mexičankou
seznámili jsme se na turné.
16) Máte ještě nějaké jiné zajímavé plány do budoucna?
René: Myslím, že budeme trochu víc pracovat na našich vedlejších projektech ale nikdy nevíš, co se může stát ale rád bych víc pracoval ve studiu s ostatníma muzikantama. Teď zrovna pracuji na skladbě s Jeppem z Phony Orphants
Martin: Snažím se dát dohromady sólové album (Martian) a taky se snažím pracovat ve studiu s nejrůznějšími lidmi

A samozřejmě budeme hodně cestovat
